California Proposition 65 (also referred to as Prop 65) is legislation in California regarding informing consumers of potential health hazards from specified chemicals. Its full name is the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. It places warnings on any product containing minute or greater levels of chemicals that have been deemed in the state of California to potentially cause detrimental health effects including cancer or reproductive harm. Prop 65 regulates substances officially listed by California as having a 1 in 100,000 chance of causing cancer over a 70-year period or birth defects or other reproductive harm. This is generally a volume well below universally accepted limits for safe exposure.
California Proposition 65 applies to any company doing business in the state of California. It was originally passed in 1986 and since then, continues to have new chemicals added to it. It currently lists over 800 chemicals including many routinely used in everyday consumer products for years without documented harm. The list is administered by California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency.
While it is not required that companies comply with these warning regulations outside the state of California, Labconco is committed to safety and transparency. We have chosen to place warnings on our applicable products so our consumers can make informed decisions. The warning does not infer that our products will cause cancer or reproductive harm. Labconco has not conducted testing for exposure; these warnings arise simply from the presence of the listed chemical. While we believe our products are not harmful when used as designed, we rely on our supplier partners to help with this effort to provide these warnings to comply with Proposition 65.
